An Ode to the Everyday
I sing the praises of the expected morning kiss,
The steady tone of the DJs on WYSO,
The nooks and crannies of my English muffin,
The homogeneity of McDonald’s Cokes
And Dunkin’ coffee.
I sing the praises of my morning meetings,
My coworkers’ grumblings about the status quo
And the jokes about how long it takes
To get from Monday to Friday
Every. Single. Week.
I am oh so grateful for the mundane,
For the everyday, for the rituals
That keep us grounded from
One day to the next, to the next
And on to the next.
My younger self craved adventure
And even my older self longs for change
But not just for change’s sake.
This world has gone mad, mad, mad.
So I am grateful for the sanity that comes
With the expected.
